2.5 New Vision Generation – An Essilor Group Initiative

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Essilor Group has put into place 2.5 New Vision Generation. The initiative aims to provide improved sight to people with visual impairment, more particularly to those who cannot afford glasses at a regular price. By allowing good vision to people in need, the company enables the achievement of the UN 2030 global goals for a sustainable world. Essilor International S.A. is a global ophthalmic organization, headquartered in Charenton-le-Pont in Paris, France. The company has set itself CSR targets for 2020 covering several social and environmental initiatives which have, amongst others, given birth to 2.5 New Vision Generation.  Its mission consists in “improving lives by improving sight” which emphasizes the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

Why does 2.5 New Vision Generation exist?

According to estimations by Essilor, 2.5 billion people have uncorrected vision of which approximately 90% live in developing countries. The purpose of 2.5 NVG is to allow people with visual impairment to improve their eyesight.

What are their work areas?

The initiative of 2.5 New Vision Generation engages in:

  • Improving access to vision care solutions by creating micro-entrepreneurs in primary vision care and developing infrastructure.

  • Raising awareness through training, locally adapted communication and merchandising materials

  • Distribution of a wide range of locally affordable quality eyeglasses

  • Improve acceptance of eyeglass among wearers and local community

The Vision Ambassadors generally work within their home community. Considering the particularly precarious living conditions in small towns and villages of the Ivory Coast, this social cause has been launched end of 2016 and initially in the rural areas of the country.
